Business Central Error: Debit Rounding Account Is Missing in Vendor Posting Group

Posting a payment or applying vendor entries in Business Central stops with this error:

Debit Rounding Account is missing in Vendor Posting Group Code: XXXX.
G/L Account No. must have a value in G/L Entry: Entry No.=NNNNN. It cannot be zero or empty.

The fix

  1. Open Vendor Posting Groups and find the code named in the error.
  2. Fill in both Debit Rounding Account and Credit Rounding Account.
  3. Post again.

Which account? A profit and loss account, such as your rounding differences account or your realized exchange gain/loss account. Use the same account for both fields. Do not use the payables account.

Why it happens

You partly paid a foreign currency entry, and rounding left a one-cent gap in local currency. Business Central needs an account to post that cent to.

Example: invoice of USD 302.00 at rate 4.2345, part-paid with USD 101.00.

Step Calculation MYR
Invoice 302.00 × 4.2345 = 1,278.819 1,278.82
Payment applied 101.00 × 4.2345 = 427.6845 427.68
Remaining, by subtraction 1,278.82 − 427.68 851.14
Remaining, at the rate 201.00 × 4.2345 = 851.1345 851.13
Difference 851.13 − 851.14 −0.01

That 0.01 is posted as a Correction of Remaining Amount to the rounding account. If the field is blank, posting fails. The second line of the error is only a side effect of the first.

When to expect it

  • Yes: foreign currency entries left partly open. Part-payments, overpayments, advances, and credit memos of a different amount.
  • Never: local currency entries, or entries paid in full.

It looks random because the cent only appears on some combinations of amount and exchange rate. That is why the same vendor can post fine for months and then fail.

Tip: fill in the same two fields on your other vendor posting groups and on your Customer Posting Groups. The same error can happen on the sales side.
